Early stages of lung cancer usually are symptom free, according to an article (author unknown) titled “How is Lung Cancer Detected?” The article, dated 11/2006, is published by The American Lung Association on their web site. The article cautions that one or more of the symptoms listed may or may not be related to lung cancer; however, most people with advanced stages of this disease will experience one or more of the symptoms. Lung Cancer SymptomsThe American Lung Association, in their 11/2006 article, lists the following symptoms:
“These conditions are also symptomatic of many other lung problems, so a person who has any of these symptoms should see a doctor...” the article advises. The article also states that the doctor will ask questions about medical history, and possible exposure to hazardous substances, and other risk factors related to lung cancer. Lung Cancer Detection & TreatmentThe doctor could perform several different exams to detect lung cancer, according to the 11/2006 article. The following exams may be recommended by a doctor:
If one receives a lung cancer diagnosis, the article states that the doctor will probably test to see if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. This, in addition to other tests, could require a CT, MRI, or a bone scan. Fluid in Lung Causes and TreatmentThose suffering with lung cancer may experience fluid build up around the lungs. A symptom of this is shortness of breath. Smokers should have routine screening and all others with lung cancer risk factors, advises the article. The doctor can remove the fluid around the lungs through a small needle. The American Lung Association warns that many lung cancer symptoms are due to other causes. It is wise to consult a doctor for testing. The earlier lung cancer is detected, the better the chances for survival. As lung cancer progresses and spreads to other parts of the body, chest pain along with shortness of breath may be experienced. The treatment the doctor could perform, according to the article, may be with oxygen while prescribing opioids, such as morphine to ease pain. Avoiding risk factors, such as smoking and other hazards, improves cancer prevention chances. Also, exercise, avoiding risk factors, and living a healthy life-style is recommended.
